Please Let Them Be Ants

I guess TX is a pretty insect-friendly state, but it doesn't do much to make me feel much better about finding a big ol' colony of these bad boys in my attic today while changing the AC filters :(

Ick. I hate those red ants. I love that in VA when ants invade our home, it's gross but not painful. No worries about bites or stings or whatever it is that those little devils do. Ick. Good luck getting rid of them.

Joe, These are carpenter ants. You want them out of your house. They are wood destroying, but the progress is very slow. It could take many years for serious damage. We had a colony that completely destroyed our window sill (it was a shell of paint over sponge cake/paper).

Trim all trees back so they don't touch the house and get some borax.

Hey Kate D
Actually, they are acrobat ants and what is strange is that they seem to have vacated the premises. My guess is that once the moisture dried up from the last storm, they moved on. Acrobat ants like to live in moist wood.
